BERANDA NUSANTARA
Kalimantan Timur, Indonesia
Beranda Nusantara (IKN) Area is designed to function as a showcase of Nusantara to the world, featuring a recreational typology comprising a Memorial Park, Forest Trail, and supporting buildings such as a Parking Building, VIP Building, Beranda Nusantara Gallery, and Ecoregion Building. These elements are spread across a large site dominated by forest or trees, resulting in a strong "forest" and "dense" impression within the project. It is also anticipated that this area will be home to various fauna.
Special lighting planning is intended as a measure to minimize intervention in the existing and developing forest ecosystem, particularly for nocturnal fauna. The natural light conditions during the day and night have established crucial natural cycles in the bodies of fauna. The impact of artificial lighting, namely light pollution at night, can have harmful effects on animals because they perceive this light pollution as daylight, thus affecting their psychology and behavior. Therefore, the concept of "Wildlife Friendly Lighting" is being implemented.
Several efforts are being applied in the planning to realize the "Wildlife Friendly Lighting" concept, including:
Illuminating only the necessary areas and at the required times
The use of automatic timers for outdoor area lighting will have a positive impact in terms of energy savings and the minimization of light pollution. Minimizing light pollution is achieved through careful grouping of lighting fixtures.
Selecting luminaires with the principle of "Down, Low & Shielded"
This is realized by minimizing upward-directed lighting and placing light sources below human eye level.
Using light with a color-correlated temperature from amber to warm white
Several studies have found that blue light at night can disrupt the biological rhythms of fauna. For example, in nocturnal fauna, blue light can cause disorientation and interfere with migration processes. Therefore, amber to warm white lighting (2200 K – 3000 K) is a suitable light color for areas with rich fauna.
